RESPECT

Respect in All Areas: Building it into Your Daily Life

OVERVIEW

Chances are you have heard people say, “treat others the way you want to be treated.” It’s one of the first things you learn as a kid. The big idea behind this common phrase is respect, which is simply treating someone or something with importance. This can be a challenge because even though we know someone deserves respect, we don’t always do a great job treating them with respect. In fact, sometimes we fail to do this not because we don’t want to, but because we aren’t sure how. So, what does treating ourselves, our peers, our parents or our authorities with respect look like? It means choosing words, actions and attitudes that honour someone else. It means making the repeated decision to be consistent in showing respect. The more we choose respect, the more respect becomes an automatic reaction to the people around us. So, while it may have been something we learned as a kid, it turns out treating others the way you want to be treated is always a good idea.
